Press Release - March 29, 2004
Summit Chorale Performs Holocaust Cantata: Songs from the Camps
Experience Summit Chorale's moving rendition of Holocaust Cantata: Songs from the Camps, at 8 PM on Saturday, February 26, in the new Concert Hall at Drew University in Madison, NJ. American composer Donald McCullough and lyricist Denny Clark scoured the archives of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum for words and melodies written by Polish prisoners incarcerated in Nazi concentration camps. The resulting songs, readings and musical arrangements testify to the enduring power of the human spirit.
Summit Chorale is joined by soloists Rochelle Ellis, soprano, David Huneryager, baritone, Priscilla Lee, cello, and Thomas Cuffari, piano, under the musical direction of conductor Richard Garrin, performing Holocaust Cantata in its entirety for the first time in our area. Joni Fritz and Jay Ludwig read the accompanying text. An exhibit and a pre-concert lecture, at 7:30 pm, are provided by the Drew University Center for Holocaust/Genocide Study. Other works in the Judaism-themed program are Jerusalem of Gold, Shalom Jerusalem, and Jerusalem is Mine.
First performed in 1998 at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., Holocaust Cantata marks the Chorale's premiere performance in the recently completed state-of-the-art concert hall adjoining the Dorothy Young Center for the Arts on the Drew campus. Now in its 96th season, Summit Chorale is delighted to welcome audiences to its new home at Drew University, where it is Chorus-in-Residence. Be among the first to experience this magnificent and intimate performance space that promises to be an acoustic treasure for music lovers.
Tickets are $20 at the door ($18 seniors/students) or $18 for advance purchase ($16 seniors/students). For reservations or information, call 973-292-1186. The new concert hall and a large on-campus parking lot are near the main entrance of Drew University at the intersection of Madison Ave. (Rte. 124), Lancaster Rd., and Elm St.
Funding for Summit Chorale is made possible in part by the NJ State Council on the Arts, Department of State, a partner agency of the National Endowment of the Arts, through a grant administered by the Union County Division of Cultural & Heritage Affairs.
