Press Release - April 7, 2004
Nair Gives Insight Into Brahms Requiem
Brahms, His Life, His Times, His Requiem, an illustrated lecture, will be presented by Garyth Nair at 8 PM on Monday, April 19, at Brothers College Chapel, Drew University campus, Madison, NJ. Tickets for the lecture are $10 at the door. Maestro Nair is Professor of Music at Drew University, where he conducts the University Chorale and Orchestra and is also Director of Vocal Studies.
Professor Nair is a recognized interpreter of Brahms, having conducted almost all of Brahms' choral works during the course of his career. In his exploration of the great Romantic composer's German Requiem, Maestro Nair will begin by discussing the historical context of its composition, and its position both within Brahms' oeuvre and in the general choral repertoire. The presentation will include photographs of Brahms, as well as people and places important in his life during the writing of his choral masterpiece.
The subsequent analysis of the work will be illustrated by copious examples drawn from significant recordings. Special attention will be given to Brahms' use of musical language to support the ideas stated in the choral text. Brahms dedicated his German Requiem, with its message of salvation and hope, to the whole of humanity.
This lecture is designed to give the listener an in-depth appreciation of Brahms' Ein deutsches Requiem when it is performed at 8:00 PM on Saturday, May 1, in the auditorium of Summit Middle School, 272 Morris Avenue, Summit, NJ. Maestro Nair will be conducting the combined Summit Chorale and Drew University Chorale, the Chamber Symphony of New Jersey, and soloists Linda Carroll, soprano, and Mark Delavan, baritone. Tickets for the concert may be purchased in advance for $18 ($16 for students and seniors) or at the door for $20 ($18). Call (973) 292-1186 or visit www.summitchorale.org
Funding for these events is made possible in part by the NJ State Council on the Arts, Department of State, a partner agency of the National Endowment of the Arts, through a grant administered by the Union County Division of Cultural and Heritage Affairs.
