Maestro Nair Bids Farewell With Brahms' Requiem
Summit Chorale, New Jersey's oldest active choral group, will honor its beloved music director of the past 34 years with a performance of Brahms' Ein deutsches Requiem (A German Requiem) at 8:00 PM on Saturday, May 1, in the auditorium of Summit Middle School, 272 Morris Avenue, Summit, NJ. For conductor Garyth Nair's farewell concert, Summit Chorale will be joined by Drew University Chorale, soprano Linda Carroll, baritone Mark Delavan, and the Chamber Symphony of New Jersey. Tickets for the concert may be purchased in advance for $18 ($16 for students and seniors) or at the door for $20 ($18). Call (973) 292-1186 or visit www.summitchorale.org.

Maestro Nair has conducted almost all of Brahms' choral works in the course of his career. The great Romantic composer dedicated his German Requiem to the memory of his mother and his mentor Robert Schumann, and with its message of salvation and hope to the whole of humanity. In anticipation of the gala performance, Maestro Nair will present Brahms: his life, his times, his Requiem, an illustrated lecture featuring excerpts from Brahms' letters, anecdotal tales of the times, and selected recordings. This event will take place at 8:00 PM on Monday, April 19, at Brothers College Chapel, Drew University, Madison, NJ. Tickets for the lecture are $10 at the door.

A native of New Jersey, Mark Delavan is a regular at the New York City Opera, where he is currently singing the title role in Sweeney Todd. He made his Metropolitan Opera debut in January, 2001 as Amonasro in Aida. He has appeared at major opera houses and festivals around the country, including the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Santa Fe Opera and Spoletto U.S.A. Festival.

Linda Carroll began her concert career in her home state of Maine. She has performed to critical acclaim in The Creation, Carmina Burana, Fauré's Requiem, and Mozart's Requiem as well as performances of more than 75 oratorios and masses. In addition to her singing career, Dr. Carroll is a world-renowned voice researcher and speech pathologist specializing in care of the professional voice. She directs voice assessment and therapy at the Grabscheid Voice Center at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City.

Now in its 95th year, Summit Chorale is Chorus in Residence at Drew University and has earned critical acclaim for its artistry and for the excellence of its programming. Maestro Nair is retiring as Music Director and Conductor to devote more time to his voice research, writing, and work at Drew University, where he is Professor of Music. He conducts the University Chorale and Orchestra and is also Director of Vocal Studies.
