Maintaining a Healthy Voice

Press Release - February 21, 2002
It is the first thing we hear upon entering the world and, if we are lucky, the last thing we hear before we leave. It can comfort, influence, alarm and captivate. It is the human voice. Learn how to safeguard this precious gift at Maintaining a Healthy Voice, a seminar presented by Garyth Nair on Saturday, April 6, 12:30 - 4:30 PM at Baldwin Gymnasium in the Simon Forum at Drew University, Madison.

It is a must for singers, teachers, actors, choral directors, medical professionals, or anyone who appreciates his or her voice and wishes to keep it at its best.

The workshop, sponsored jointly by Summit Chorale and the Classical New Jersey Society, will be presented in three parts: "How does the voice work?" will feature video and animated imagery to illustrate how breathing, phonation, resonation, posture, and support are intricately intertwined. Computer analysis of sound, one of Professor Nair's specialties, will be used to illustrate various points. During the breaks, audience members will be invited to use this technology to see their own voices analyzed on-screen.

During the second session, "When our voices don't work- what do we do? " you will learn of the problems that can beset the voice, as well as proper diagnosis, the latest medical findings and recommended treatments. The final session, "Preventative Maintenance for the Long Run" will cover strategies for support, breathing, belting, use of range and tessitura, warm-ups, the aging voice -- concerns affecting virtually every singer.

All sessions include generous time for questions from the audience.

If you register by March 30th, the seminar costs $25.00. Members of the Classical NJ Society - $20, students with valid ID - $10. Drew University students with valid University ID can attend free of charge. Registration at the door is $5 additional. The fee will include an information packet which you will receive at the seminar. Please make checks payable to Summit Chorale and send to Summit Chorale. PO Box 265, Summit, NJ 07902-0265.
