How Suite It Is

Press Release - January 25, 2002
Could your mind use an airing? Clear away the cobwebs and prepare for spring. Join Summit Chorale for How Suite It Is, a refreshing program featuring two choral suites created by Music Director Garyth Nair. These two works feature the "greatest choral and orchestra hits" from Bizet's Carmen and Mendelssohn's Elijah. The Chorale will be joined by full orchestra and renowned Metropolitan Opera star Jerome Hines as the narrator for the Elijah Suite. The performance will be under the baton of Garyth Nair.

The concert will take place on Saturday, March 16, 2002, 8:00 PM at Crescent Avenue Presbyterian Church, 716 Watchung Avenue, Plainfield, NJ. Advance purchase tickets are $16, $11 Seniors/Students, or $18 and $13 at the door. Call 973-762-8486 for tickets or more information. The church is handicapped-accessible and a large print program will be available.

Enjoy the sweeping theater and colorful orchestration of Carmen, including the "Chorus of the Cigarette Girls" and the "March of the Toreadors." Lose yourself in the drama of Elijah. You will also hear the Suite Française, an imaginative arrangement for winds and harpsichord by Francis Poulenc, who put a clever 20th century twist on a set of 16th century dances.

In its 93rd season, Summit Chorale is New Jersey's oldest active choral group. Music Director Garyth Nair is also Associate Professor of Music at Drew University, where he is Director of Vocal Studies and Conductor of the Drew Chorale and Orchestra.

So enjoy the guiltless pleasure of hearing the "good parts" without dutifully wading through the whole work. Spring is coming a little early this year. How suite it is!

Funding for Summit Chorale has been made possible in part by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts through a grant administered by the Union County Division of Cultural and Heritage Affairs. Additional funding has been granted by the Frank and Lydia Bergen Foundation. Summit Chorale is Chorus in Residence at Drew University.
